Droids

Between the world of antiques and brand new designer furniture there is a whole other source of furniture available that is left unexplored by many of us – that of furniture auctions. We often consider auctions as being only for very expensive items of period furniture and fine works of art and the names of Sotheby’s and Adams spring to mind. You might also consider it not worth the hassles involved in viewing and bidding at an auction – you can’t walk into an auction room and choose the exact colour to match your living room, there may be only four dining room chairs and you need six and you may not fancy sleeping in someone else’s bed.

But consider for a while the advantages.

You will probably find something a little bit unusual for a fraction of the price you would pay in the main furniture shops. If you are looking for a new sofa you can end up traipsing around several shops before you find the one you like and spend even more time than you would looking in auction rooms. And remember that every time you sleep in a hotel bed there have been lots of people there before you! If you find a really nice bed at a furniture auction you can always invest in a brand new mattress. Auctions are a great way for new house owners to furnish their home for very little cost. You are buying thing not only at second hand prices, but at wholesale second hand prices as many of the customers at auctions are antique dealers and second hand shop owners looking for a bargain as well.
